MIZHUEV, HOUSE OF (26 Fontanka River Embankment), an architectural monument of high classicism, a unique example of the early 19th century apartment house. It was constructed in 1804-1806 (architect A.D. Zakharov) for the merchant K. Mizhuev, who was one of the contractors of the construction of Mikhailovsky Castle. A hexastyle portico of a four-storied building is accomplished with a triangular pediment. The gala rooms face towards the embankment, flights of the front staircase rest on massive poles finished with semicolumns. One corner was rounded, as the adjoining ground had not been built up. The wing overlooking Mokhovaya Street (building 41) was constructed at the end of the 18th century and later built over. In the house of Mizhuev in 1812-1813 and 1816 the future Decembrist P.I. Pestel stayed with his father I.B. Pestel. In the wing on Mokhovaya Street N.M. Karamzin spent the last years of his life. In this house Count P.A. Vyazemsky and the daughter of M.I. Kutuzova E.M. Khitrovo (often visited by Pushkin) lived, in the salon of Khitrovo, outstanding figures of Russian culture of the second quarter of the 19th century gathered.
