PEDESTRIAN ZONES. The first pedestrian zone in St. Petersburg was laid out on Malaya Konyushennaya Street after its reconstruction in 1995-97 (architect F. K. Romanovsky). Along with the outward refurbishment a capital repair of the entire communication network was carried out, the ground was paved with granite and artificial tiles. A monument to N. V. Gogol (sculptor М. V. Belov), decorative figure Gorodovoy (a street policeman in tsarist Russia) (sculptor А. S. Charkin) and a meteorological cabin (1914, architect N. Е. Lansere, sculptor V. V. Kozlov) were erected on the site. The lacking infrastructure, the specifics of the establishments located in the street (a consulate and hospital) make it less attractive for tourists. In 1997-99 a pedestrian zone was laid out on Malaya Sadovaya Street (followed by the refurbishment of the adjacent back yards of the neighbouring buildings). The Clock Fountain (produced by Klyuch Close Joint Stock Company), the Statue Photographer (sculptor B. А. Petrov), metal figures of cats and dogs add a festive atmosphere to the street. Malaya Sadovaya Street alongside with reconstructed Manezhnaya Square, Italyanskaya Street and Iskusstv Square constitute a large recreational zone linked by Italyansky Bridge with the former with Malaya Konyushennaya Street as its centre. In 2001 a pedestrian zone with a well developed infrastructure was laid out in the 6th Line and 7th Line of Vasilievsky Island between Sredny Avenue and Bolshoy Avenue.
