SAN GALLI Franz Karlovich (Franz Friedrich Wilhelm) (1824-1908, St. Petersburg), entrepreneur and public figure, Actual Civil Counsellor (1889), and honorary process engineer (1888). Native of Germany, he graduated from a gymnasium in Stettin. He arrived in St. Petersburg in 1843 and acquired Russian citizenship in 1851. An enterprise he founded in 1853 gradually grew into a large plant specialising in equipment for heating, water supply, and sewerage, as well as in ornamental casting. The plant supplied its products for construction of palaces for the Emperor and Grand Dukes, as well as to various institutions, banks, industrial buildings, and residential houses. The plant also produced a significant part of equipment for the gas lighting and water supply systems of St. Petersburg, as well as lampposts, balcony rails, garden fences, etc. to meet the city's needs. It was transformed into the Bummash Plant for manufacturing paper industry equipment in the 1930s. The Plant was located at 60-62 Ligovsky Avenue. A member of the City Duma in 1872-92, San Galli contributed a lot to the development of city economy. He was frequently engaged by the Ministry of Finance to consider trade and industry issues at various meetings. He was also a founding member of the St. Petersburg Society of Plant and Factory Owners. San Galli owned houses at 58-66 Ligovsky Avenue and 8 Nevsky Prospect, and a mansion at 62 Ligovsky Avenue built by architect K. K. Rachau in 1869-72. He financed the construction of the so-called San Galli's Colony on Petrovsky Island in the 1870s, which consisted of a number of comfortable residential houses. He was buried at Tentelevskoe Cemetery (not preserved).
