Baltiiskaya Pipeline System

BALTIISKAYA PIPELINE SYSTEM. A network of pipelines in the Northwestern Federal District of Russia, intended to transport petroleum and crude oil from the Komi Republic and Western Siberia for export and to meet the region's needs. The construction of the Baltiiskaya Pipeline System was launched in May 2000. It includes the main pipeline from Yaroslavl to Kirishi (constructed in 1986), the Kirishi - Krasny Bor - St. Petersburg Seaport crude oil pipeline, and the Kirishi - Primorsk (Leningrad Region) oil-pipe line, with an underwater passage under the Neva River, an oil-tanker terminal in Primorsk (completed in December 2001) and a permanent berth in Primorsk. The Primorsk oil-tanker terminal handles 2.5 million tons of crude oil annually. The second section of the Kirishi - Primorsk pipeline (with a capacity of 18 million tons annually, and a prospective increase to 30 million tons) has been under construction since January 2003. The pipelines encompassing the Baltiiskaya Pipeline System are 1885 km long; a total of 833 km of pipe is under construction (total is 2718 km).
