SAPERNY, a municipal formation within the Kolpinsky District, far and southeast of Saint Petersburg, between the Neva River and the Saint Petersburg - Volkhovstroy railway line; also a railway station. As of 2002, the population totalled 1,200 people. Saperny also includes the eastern part of the former Kormchino Village (where Kormchinsky Brook flows into the Neva River). On the West, it borders the Pontonny settlement. The Petrozavodskoe Highway runs through Saperny. The Lagernoe Highway connects Saperny with the town of Kolpino. Its name comes from the camps for field-engineers ("saper" in Russian) which existed here until the turn of the 20th century. It emerged in 1906 as a railway settlement. In the 1950-60s, Saperny saw intense residential development. The construction of the First Furniture Factory (today the Baltika Integrated Works) and a corresponding town turned Saperny into an urban settlement (1964).
