REPINO, a former settlement, known as Kuokkala until 1948; became a municipal unit within the Kurortny District in 1998; 37 kilometres northwest of Saint Petersburg, in a resort area on the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland; also a train station. As of 2002, the population totalled approximately 1,500 people. The place was renamed in honour of I. E. Repin, who in 1899 acquired the Penates Farmstead (today a museum-estate). A railway to Vyborg, built in 1870, turned Repino into a summer cottage settlement. In 1918-40, it was under Finnish rule; in 1941-44, Repino was occupied by Finnish troops; in the summer of 1944, it was liberated as part of the Vyborgskaya Military Operation. In the post-war years, Repino became a popular resort spot. Most of the inhabitants are employed in the service sector. Repino includes the vacation resort hotels Burevestnik, Zarya, and Baltiets; the Cinematographers' and Composers' Houses; the Repinskaya Hotel; the Repino Cardiological Centre; a summer cottage community; summer playgrounds for kindergartens; and popular cafes and restaurants. In the 1990s, individual country houses began to be constructed in Repino. The Konsulskaya Derevnya (consule's village), an elite cottage settlement, is located at 449 Primorskoe Highway.
