KRASNOE SELO, a town; since 1973, it formed a part of Krasnoselsky District of Leningrad; since 1997 - municipal unit; 26 km to the south-west of St. Petersburg centre, on Narva federal motorway. A railway station on the line St. Petersburg - Gatchina. The population is over 42,200 people (2001). The date of foundation is considered to be 1714, when a mill for linen (later paper) manufacture was constructed on the Dudergofka River at the behest of Peter the Great. Inhabitants of the village of the same name of Kolomensky Uezd (district) of Moscow province were moved here to work at the paper factory. It was then that Peter the Great presented Krasnoe Selo to his wife, Catherine I. In 1718, the first small palace was built. In the 18th - early 19th centuries, Krasnoe Selo was a large agrarian-industrial settlement. The Life Guard corps troops’ summer manoeuvre was held in the region of Krasnoe Selo annually (see the article Krasnoselsky Camp). In 1825, the project of Krasnoe Selo development was approved. In 1859, railway line Ligovo - Krasnoe Selo was built, and in 1872 - Krasnoe Selo - Gatchina appeared. At the beginning of the 20th century, Krasnoe Selo consisted of Kolomenskaya Settlement, Bratoshinskaya settlement, Pavlovskaya Settlement and Fabrichnaya Settlement; in 1918, it was transformed in the town Krasny (the name has not naturalised). In October 1919, battles against General N.N. Yudenich’s troops were fought near Krasnoe Selo. From September 1941 to 19 December 1944, Krasnoe Selo was occupied with German forces, from the surrounding heights German artillery shelled Leningrad. In the 1960-70s, Krasnoe Selo was the region of booming industrial and residential development. The present-day Krasnoe Selo features Krasnogorodskaya Experimental Paper Factory, AvtoVAZ Service Department, Gazstroydetal Plant, Dairy Factory and a number of science-intensive enterprises. In 1962, the monument to A.F. Mozhaysky was unveiled. In Krasnoe Selo, there are common graves of soldiers fallen in battles for the city. Krasnoe Selo Park is also well-known with citizens.
