City Topography/Historical Geography/Residential Areas
SHUVALOVO-OZERKI, the region of large-scale residential development in the north of St. Petersburg, between Vyborgskoe Freeway in the west, the line of circular railway in the north, Svetlanovsky Avenue in the east and Severny Avenue in the south. The name originates from Shuvalovo and Ozerki areas located to the west. Following the General Plan of Leningrad of 1967, the territory was developed with standard high rise blocks of flats. The east part of Shuvalovo-Ozerki was developed mainly in the first half of the 1970s, when 5-storied buildings of first mass series appeared on this site. In the western part, the development was complete by the second half of the 1980s, bearing-wall blocks of flats of improved design predominate here. Residential development of the territory adjacent to Vyborgskoe Freeway has been carried out since the early 2000s. Shuvalovo-Ozerki is the most populated residential district of St. Petersburg. Main thoroughfares are Prosveshcheniya Avenue, Lunacharskogo Avenue, Severny Avenue, Engelsa Avenue and Kultury Avenue. Ozerki, Prospekt Prosveshcheniya and Grazhdansky Prospect metro stations service the district. There is an industrial and communal zone along the branch line of Ruchyi - Parnas - Pargolovo railway (constructed in 1940) that confines the district in the north. Single industrial enterprises are surrounded by residential blocks (Iskra Spinning-Factory, Irkom - Sloistye plastiki, Stroidetal, etc). On the territory of Shuvalovo-Ozerki, there is a number of large medical establishments: General Hospital № 2, Health Department № 122, Regional Clinical Hospital, City Diagnostic and Advisory Centre.
