ZHERNOVKA, locality in the northern part of St. Petersburg. Its name derived from a former village, known from 1778, which was situated on the left bank of the Zhernovka River (the Lapka) at the place where the Zhernovka converged with the Okhta River. Both the village and the river were effaced in the early 1970s, in the course of the development of the Rzhevka - Porokhovye area. The name was retained in the appellations of Zhernovskie Streets, First - Sixth, at Porokhovye, which gained their names in 1956, owing to their direction towards Zhernovka, and in the name of the Zhernovsky Bridge thrown across the Luppa River. The territory of Zhernovka accommodates the former Bezobrazovs' summer residence (9 Irinovsky Avenue), where some remains of the landscape park together with a pond can still be found. The principal house of the estate was built in the late 18th century in the classical style and is alleged to be the work of G. Quarenghi.
