VOLYNKINA, formerly a village, situated by the Ekateringofka River in the area of the intersection of present-day Kalinina Street and Trefoleva Street. From the 15th century, this place was the site of the Finnish village of Vallakula, which came to be the origin of the Russian name of the village, Volynkina, derived in the mid-18th century. Until the 1920s, Volynkina was a barren working-class suburb. In the 1950s-60s, the territory of the village was built up with various non-residential buildings.
