ULYANKA, an area to the south-west of St. Petersburg; in the north-east, it borders on Dachnoe (divided from it with Alexandrino forest park); in the west, it is confined with Marshal Zhukov Avenue, in the south - with Narodnogo Opolcheniya Avenue. In the 17th century, there was Ulyalya Village, where the toponym Ulyanka originates from. In the 19th century, Ulyanka was a regular country place. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, the front line was set to the south of Ulyanka, the majority of the constructions on its territory was levelled during bombardment (like the Ulyanka summer residence of Sheremetev Counts; only its 18th century park with ponds and islands was preserved). Since the 1960s, it was a region of booming residential development. The main thoroughfare is Veteranov Avenue. The toponym is preserved in the name of the railway platform.
