STEKLYANNY SETTLEMENT (Glass Settlement), an area on the left bank of the Neva River, on the territory of Nevskaya Zastava, between Obvodny Canal in the north and Smolenskoe village in the south. In the 1770s, the territory belonged to G.A. Potemkin, at whose order mirror- and glass-works were constructed (in 1791, they were bought to the treasury); around them a labourer settlement was developed. On the territory of Steklyanny settlement, there was a vast Glukhoe Lake (hence the name of Glukhoozerskoe Freeway), buried in 1870s. In the 1910s, the development plan of the territory to the south of Steklyanny settlement was approved (so-called Tsarsky settlement), it projected a system of streets - "circles" and streets - "rays" (has never been implemented, but its element can be traced in the name of 2nd Luch Street ("luch" is Russian for "ray")). The history of Steklyanny settlement is also reflected in the names of some streets - Khrustalnaya ("crystal") Street, Steklyannaya ("glass") Street, Glazurnaya ("glaze") Street, Fayansovaya ("faience") Street, Slobodskaya ("settlement") Street and Zerkalny ("mirror") Lane. The present-day Steklyanny settlementis an industrial zone with only two small areas along Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue built up with residential blocks of flats in the 1930-50s.
