SMOLENSKOE FIELD, the historical name of the area located in the central part of Vasilievsky Island, between Nineteenth Line in the east, Smolenskoe Cemetery (hence the name) in the north and the harbour in the east. In the 18th-19th centuries, it was a vast neglected ground and served as a place of execution. In the 1930s, the Metallist residential block was constructed (16 Twenty First Line of Vasilievsky Island), Vasileostrovets Garden was laid and Kirov Place of Culture was built on the territory of Smolenskoe Field. In the 1930-50s, the territory between Sredny Avenue and Maly Avenue of Vasilievsky Island was mainly built up with industrial enterprises; Twenty Forth Line and Twenty Fifth Line of Vasilievsky Island were built up as far as Maly Avenue. Today, the name Smolenskoe Field is out of use.
