PULKOVO, an area in the south of St. Petersburg, at the junction of Kievskoe Freeway and the road from the town of Pushkin. It is located on Pulkovo heights. Since the 15th century, there was a village of the same name that was registered in the 18th century as a part of Imperial residence - Sarskaya Grange (Tsarskoe Selo). At that time, Pulkovo encompassed two settlements: Bolshoe (Upper) Pulkovo and Podgornoe (Foothill) Pulkovo. In the second half of the 18th century, the construction of the road St. Petersburg - Tsarskoe Selo built through Pulkovo promoted the development of the region [marble milestones have been preserved; 1772-75, architect A. Rinaldi(?)]. In Pulkovo, a park with the Grotto fountains (1807, architect A.N. Voronikhin) and Four Sphinxes (1809, architect J.F. Thomas de Thomon) was laid out. In 1839, Pulkovskaya Observatory was opened close to Pulkovo. During the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War pitched battles were fought in this region; in 1941, the advance of German troops towards Leningrad was stopped on this line. To commemorate these events, the memorial Pulkovo Line, that forms a part of the Green Belt of Glory, was opened in 1967, and in 1979, the memorial at Pulkovskoe Military Cemetery was unveiled. By the middle of the 1950s, the reconstruction of the observatory complex was almost finished, and residential houses for its assistants had been constructed. Founded in 1975, the Pulkovo Department of Tsvety (Flowers), agricultural enterprise with a residential area, is located 1.5 km to the south of Pulkovo. The toponym "Pulkovo" has been preserved in the names of Pulkovskoe Freeway and Pulkovskaya Street, Pulkovo-1 and Pulkovo-2 airports and the Pulkovskaya Hotel.
