MOSKOVSKAYA Side, the 18th century name of the territory on the left bank of the Neva River to the east and south-east from the Fontanka River, that was populated with labourers, brought from Moscow in the early 18th century (hence the name). In Moskovskaya Side there was a foundry yard and a glass yard, civil dockyard, sailcloth textile mill and other enterprises. In 1720-30, in Moskovskaya Side, the territories were allotted for regimental settlements of Preobrazhensky, Semenovsky and Izmailovsky Life Guard Regiments. Later, the territory of Moskovskaya Side was divided into administrative and territorial parts and the name gradually fell out of use.
