Kupchino

KUPCHINO, a region of large scale residential housing in the south of St. Petersburg; it is confined in the north by Fuchika Street, in the east by the Moskovskaya Line of Oktyabrskaya Railway, in the west by a line of Vitebskaya Railway. The name originates from Kupsino village (known since the 17th century), that was located on the place of what is now Kupchino metro station. In the early 18th century, Kupchino belonged to Tsesarevitch Alexey Petrovich, then passed on to Alexander Nevsky Monastery. In 1941-44, there was a front line to the south of Kupchino. Up to the early 1960s, Kupchino remained a rural area, where Nikolaevsky village (named after Shaumyan), Ryleevo village and Kupchino village were located. Since the middle of the 1960s, mass residential building has been undertaken. Gradually, the whole development region was named Kupchino. The present-day Kupchino is an extensive residential area with the population of over 350,000 people, built up with standard housing estates. The place-name has preserved in the names of Kupchinskaya Street, the metro station of the same name and railway platform of Vitebsk line.
