Nikolsky Garden

NIKOLSKY GARDEN is located in the centre of St. Petersburg between Kryukov Canal Embankment, Griboedova Canal Embankment, Rimsky-Korsakov Avenue and Nikolsky Lane. The total area of the garden is 1.7 hectares. It was laid out in the 18th century. St. Nicholas’ Naval Cathedral was erected in the centre of Nikolsky Garden in 1753-62, hence the name of the park. There is a granite obelisk crowned with a figure of an eagle (1908, architect Y. I. Filotey, sculptor A. L. Auber) behind its fence. This granite obelisk is a monument to sailors of the battleship Emperor Alexander III who perished in the Battle of Tsushima of 14 May 1905. There is also a common grave of the participants of the October Revolution and the Civil War behind the fence. There is a majestic four-tier column with a spire (1755-58) on Kryukov Canal Embankment. The landscape designs of 1874-75 were reconstructed in the second half of the 20th century.
