English Park (Peterhof)

ENGLISH PARK is situated in the west part of Peterhof, in the lower course of Shinkarka River, to the north of Egerskaya Settlement and to the northwest of Lugovoy Park. Stary Petergof railway station is situated at its southwest outskirts. The park area is 127 hectares and was laid out in 1779-90 (architect D. Quarenghi, garden masters D. Meders, V. Guld) on the territory of a menagerie in the first half of the 18th century, and was reconstructed in 1825-56 (architect A.I. Stakensсhneider, I.I. Charlemagne, garden master P.I. Erler). The park is surrounded by St. Petersburg Avenue and Blan-Melinskoy Street. The English Pond was created by damming the river, which branched into two streams: along Fabrichnaya Canal to the former Peterhof Lapidary Factory and in the direction of Shinkarka River, flowing through a river cut valley. The Oranienbaum bridgehead defence line passed through here in 1941-44. Ruins have remained of the English Palace (1781-96, architect Quarenghi, destroyed in 1941-44), a number of garden buildings, bridges and hydrotechnical constructions of the 18-19th centuries. The Primorsky Memorial was built in the place where Gostilitskoe Highway branches off, forming part of the Green Belt of Glory. A railway from St. Petersburg and Oranienbaum crosses the south part of the park.
