Alexandrino, forest park

Categories / City Topography/Green Areas/Forest Parks

ALEXANDRINO forest park is situated in the southwest part of St. Petersburg, between Narodnogo Opolcheniya Avenue, Stachek Avenue and Kozlova Street. It includes a park which formerly possessed the same name, which had been part of the estate of Count I.G. Chernyshev (the territory to the north of Veteranov Avenue) and a park of the former Ulyanka estate, situated to the south of it. Its present-day area is 112 hectares. Both parks have been landscaped and are planted with various tree species -- mostly new ones, as both parks suffered heavily in the years of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. Remnants of Count Chernyshev's former estate have been preserved in the north part of the park (also known as Chernyshev's Summer Residence). The main building was built in Classicist style in the mid-1770s (architect J.B. Vallin de la Mothe), rebuilt in the 1820s, restored in the 1960s (226 Stachek Avenue). There are several ponds on the territory of forest park; the northern area of the park, curtained by Rechnaya Street and Mostovaya Street, is sometimes called Zhukov Public Garden. Alexandrino is a recreation area.
