Krestovsky Island

KRESTOVSKY ISLAND (Cross Island), situated between the Srednaya Nevka River separating it from Elagin Island, the Malaya Nevka River separating it from Petrovsky Island, Petrogradsky Island, Aptekarsky Island, and the Krestovka River separating it from Kamenny (Stone) Island. The island is 340 hectares in area, 3.9 kilometres long, and one kilometre wide. It is linked to Petrogradsky Island via Lazarevsky (Tram) Bridge and Bolshoy Krestovsky Bridge, to Petrovsky Island via Bolshoy Petrovsky Bridge, to Kamenny Island via Malo-Krestovsky Bridge, and to Elagin Island via Second Elagin Bridge. The name appeared even before St. Petersburg was founded. It originates from Izhorian-Finnish "risti" translated as cross. The island belonged to A. D. Menshikov in 1710, Natalia Alexeevna, Peter the Great"s sister, in 1714-16, and Count Ch. A. Minich from 1731. It was then owned by Counts Razumovsky and bought by Prince Beloselsky-Belozersky in the early 19th century. The north of the island was occupied by Krestovskaya Village. The island has been a place of resort for city inhabitants since the early 20th century. Residential blocks were built for workers in Morskoy Avenue in 1930s. House 29 of the blocks has been housing the Baltic Centre of International Tourism since 1992. In the island, there is also Kirov Stadium, Dinamo Stadium, rowing centres, hospital No. 31 (former Sverdlov Hospital), swimming pool, etc. The west of the island is occupied by Primorsky Victory Park. The island has been heavily built up with exclusive houses and cottages since the late 1990s. Morskoy Avenue and Krestovsky Avenue are arterial roads. On the island there is a metro station of the same name.
