Kanonersky Island

Categories / City Topography/Geographical Objects/Islands

KANONERSKY ISLAND situated in the southwest of the delta of the Neva River and separated from Gutuevsky Island by Morskoy Canal. In the west, it is bounded by the Gulf of Finland. It stretches for more than five kilometres from north to south and is up to 600 metres wide. The area is approximately 115 hectares. Originally named Kissansaari (Cat Island), it was last renamed as Batareyny (Battery Island) and Kanonersky (Gunboat Island) because of a gunnery range erected in the island in order to train naval artillerymen in firing. The range was closed after the Sea Port was built in Gutuevsky Island in the late 19th century. Today, there is Kanonersky Shipbuilding Plant and a residential district in the island. The island is linked to Gutuevsky Island via an underwater road tunnel.
