BUYANS, is the common name of the small, often artificial, islands that were used to accommodate warehouses for various goods easily transportable by water between the 18th and the early 20th century. Among the most famous buyans were Penkovy Buyan situated by Tuchkov Bridge in the southwest of Petrogradsky Island, Vinny Buyan by Birzhevoy Bridge in the former Vatny Island, Maslyany Buyan at the end of the present-day Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment near Maslyany Canal Embankment, Salny Buyan to the south of Matisov Island, and Seldyanoy Buyan in the Ekaterinhofka River to the north of the present-day Dvinskaya Street. Most buyans stopped being islands after the canals that had separated them were filled.
