IZHORKA BOLSHAYA, a river in the far South-East of Saint Petersburg eastwards from Kolpino. The name derives from the people of Izhora. Raising from the swamps northwards from the settlement of Krasny Bor, it runs to the North and flows on the right into the Izhora River 600 meters above its estuary on the territory of Ust-Izhora settlement. The length is 14.2 kilometres, its width is 2-5 meters and the depth in the lowland reaches 3 meters. The river is entrenched by 8 -10 meters into the surface of the glaciolacustrine terrace with the height of 12-15 meters. On the right, in its middle part, the Izhorka flows into the Malaya Izhorka River, and 2 kilometres upwards there is the Bolshoy Izhorets Brook. The headwaters are clean and are used for water-supply, the low course waters are mudded up by the discharges of the industrial enterprises located in Pontonny settlement. In the late 19th - early 20th centuries numerous brick works operated along the river banks. The right river bank still accommodates the original birch and pine wood area and fragments of clay extraction pits with a depth of up to 5 meters.
