MONASTYRKA, a river in the south-east of the central part of St. Petersburg, running from Obvodny Canal to the Neva River. The name originates from the monastery located on its banks, Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The river is a lower section of the former Setuy River, otherwise known as Chernaya Rechka River, which was divided into the Monastyrka, surrounding Monastyrsky Island, and the Volkovka River in the course of the building of Obvodny Canal. The present-day length of the river is 1.15 kilometres, while the width comes up to 30 metres, and the depth measures 3-5 metres. The following bridges span the Monastyrka River: Kazachy Bridge, the Second Lavrsky Bridge, the First Lavrsky Bridge, Monastyrsky Bridge and Obukhovskoy Oborony Bridge. The necropoleis and buildings of Alexander Nevsky Lavra, as well as Metropolitan Garden, run along the Monastyrka River. The buildings situated on the left bank of the river as far as the Second Lavrsky Bridge are used for industrial purpose.
