DOKUCHAEV CENTRAL MUSEUM OF SOIL SCIENCE (6 Birzhevoy Passage) is the first ever museum of soil science. The museum was established in 1902 on the initiative of V. V. Dokuchaev as the Soil Museum of the Free Economic Society. The Soil Museum was opened in 1904. Unique collections of soils collected in expeditions organised by Dokuchaev and his disciples are on display. Soil monoliths from various natural zones are of unique value. The new ecological exhibition of soils was opened in the museum in 1996. Its five departments housed 36 thematic departments comprised of over 1,500 new exposition elements, including pictures, dioramas, portrait and sculptural galleries, and a unique soil globe. The Soil Museum is the main educational centre in the sphere of soil science and also a methodological centre for arrangement of soil expositions and exhibitions in other museums of the country. The Soil Museum organises general and thematic tours and seminars, hosts professional conferences. The museum is housed in the building of the former port warehouse (1826-32, architect I. F. Luchini).
