Troitsky Bridge

Categories / Architecture/Bridges

TROITSKY BRIDGE (Trinity Bridge; in 1918-34 Ravenstva Bridge, in 1934-99 Kirovsky Bridge), across the Bolshaya Neva River, connecting Suvorova Square with Troitskaya Square (hence, the name) and Kamennoostrovsky Avenue. Voskresensky Pontoon bridge (also known as Peterburgsky because it led to Peterburgskaya Side) was established in 1803 upstream. In 1824-27, the stone abutments for Troitsky (Suvorovsky) pontoon bridge were built here (engineer V.P. Lebedev). The lanterns of the standard lamps and cast-iron grating taken from that bridge were currently established at the entrance of Troitsky Bridge, as well as on Ioannovsky Bridge, on the right bank of Kronverkskaya Channel embankment, and on Bolshaya Dvoryanskaya Street In 1892-96, two international bids for the construction design of a permanent bridge were held (a total of 21 projects were presented). The projects of French engineer A. Eiffel and French company Batignole (engineers V. Chambrogli, R, Patouillard) won the bid, and the latter was put into practice. The bridge was built in 1897-1903 (French President F. Faure was present for the laying of the foundation) under the observation of a commission supervision body consisting of over 25 engineers and 11 architects (N.A. Belelyubsky, L.F. Nikolai, F.G. Zbrozhek, G.N. Solovyev, A.P. Pshenitsky, L.N. Benois, A.N. Pomerantsev, R.A. Gedike et al.); the members of the commission and supervision committee made a number of changes to the project. The bridge consisted of a double-sleeve opening span and five fixed spans with trussed girders of arched bottom chords. The bridge contained caisson piers and spill-through abutments; the footing was faced with granite. Decor was performed in the Art Nouveau style. In 1900-03, a three-span granite arcade was constructed on the right bank (engineer G.G. Krivoshein) together with a granite embankment. In 1893-1903, a floating bridge was being launched downstream. In 1965-67, the pivot span was replaced with a single-leaf bascule span (engineers G.M. Stepanov, K.P. Klochkov, architect Y.I. Sinitsa). The left-bank span was bridged over with a reinforced concrete girder containing granite-faced frontal curved beams. During the construction a temporary bridge with a opening span was built upstream. The silhouette of Troitsky Bridge is remarkable for its perfect proportions. In 2001-02, the bridge was reconstructed: the components of the girders and the floor of the bridge were replaced or reinforced; the decor was also restored (engineer T.Y. Kuznetsova, Y.Y. Krylov, architect O.A. Kuzevanov). The bridge is 578.3 metres long in the cross-section of the balustrades and 23.6 metres wide.
