NEW PASSAGE (57 Liteiny Avenue), a modernist architectural monument. It was constructed in 1912-1913 (architect N.V. Vasilyev) on the territory of the garden of the Ekaterininsky Institute, comprising of two tiers for commercial premises. The constructive basis of the building is a monolithic reinforced concrete framework, consequently displayed on the facade with the help of wide shop-windows and narrow piers. Large arched portals and granite encrustation of pylons plastically enriched the strict and concise composition. According to the innovative structural and decorative design the New Passage is ranked as the best example of rationalistic (proto-constructivist) trend of the Petersburg Modern. Nowadays there is a number of shops in the building: a bookstore (Akademkniga), sports and music stores.
