STATE INSTITUTE (UNIVERSITY) OF TECHNOLOGY, St. Petersburg (26 Moskovsky Avenue) was founded in 1828 under the name of the Petersburg Practical Technology Institute. In 1896 it was renamed the Technological Institute; and in 1924 it was renamed yet again to be Lensoviet. In 1930, the institute incorporated the Polytechnic Institute and Leningrad State University chemistry faculties. The institute received its present-day name in 1992. It is one of the oldest centers of technical education. The university’s professors and researchers include F.F. Belstein, V.V. Byzov, I.A. Vyshnegradsky, N.A. Gesechus, G.I. Hess, G.F. Depp, Y.S. Salkind, V.K. Zvorykin, P.A. Zemyatchensky, D.S. Zernov, A.F. Ioffe, D.P. Konovalov, S.P. Kostychev, M.I. Koshkin, V.Y. Kurbatov, S.V. Lebedev, F.F. Lender, D.I. Mendeleev, K.F. Pavlov, A.E. Poray-Koshits, B.L. Rosing, A.E. Favorsky, L.A. Chugaev, L.P. Shishko, P.R. Shulyachenko, N.L. Shchukin, A.A. Yakovkin, et al. In 2002, there were the faculties of chemical technology of inorganic matter and materials, fine organic and microbiologic synthesis, cybernetic engineering, informatics and management, organic synthesis and polymer materials technology, high technology studies, environmental protection, economics and management, and an evening faculty. Also, the institute has the Centre of the Youth Professional Orientation (the Minor Faculty, the Chemistry School for Youth, etc.). Technological Institute actively cooperates with leading foreign educational and research institutions. Professors from European universities take part in its academic activities; students and postgraduates have the right to intern at foreign enterprises. The Technological Institute occupies a large complex of educational, laboratory and processing buildings that were planned and constructed in the mid-19th to early 20th centuries by the architects F.F. Bekman, A.P. Maximov, and L.P. Shishko. In 1905-06, revolutionary meetings and sessions of Petersburg Soviet of Workers Faculties took place in the institute’s classrooms.
