PAVLOVSK VAUXHALL (Pavlovsk Kursaal), concert hall at the Pavlovsk Railway Station (1836, 1844, architects F.I. Rusca, A.I. Stakenschneider, 1861, architect A.V. Petzold), centre of St. Petersburg's concert life during the summer months of the 19th - early 20th centuries. Opening on 22 May 1838;, Pavlovsk Vauxhall featured performances by orchestras directed by Gungl Joseph and Gungl Johann, J. Strauss-son (1856-65 and 1869) and his brothers, B. Bilse, G. Mansfeld, and others. In 1875, a theatre was built at Pavlovsk Vauxhall (architect N.L. Benois; opened on 18 May 1876), where M.G. Savina, M.N. Ermolova, V.F. Komissarzhevskaya performed, among many others. A permanent Philharmonic Orchestra of Pavlovsk Vauxhall was established in the early 1880s. In 1892-1903, conductor N.V. Galkin held weekly Russian musical soirees, which helped popularise works by composers of the Moguchaya Kuchka (known in Europe as The Five, or The Mighty Handful). In the early 1900s, A.K. Glazunov, M.M. Ippolitov-Ivanov, and others conducted concerts there. In 1917, the Pavlovsk Orchestra and the Court Orchestra were integrated (from 1921, called the Symphony Orchestra of the Philharmonic Society). The theatre building burnt down in the 1930s, and the Pavlovsk Vauxhall was burnt down by German troops in the years of the Great Patriotic War. The musical pavilion of the Pavlovsk Railway Station houses an exhibition devoted to the musical life of the town.
