RUMYANTSEV MUSEUM was opened on 28 May, 1831 in the house of Count N. P. Rumyantsev (44 Angliiskaya Embankment; see Rumyantsev House) transferred to the treasury in 1828 together with its collections and the library (over 30,000 volumes). The museum was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Public Education. The collection included manuscripts, incunabulums, geographical maps, coins and medals, ethnographical and archaeological collections, pieces of painting and sculpture. The collection of minerals (8299 pieces) also was of unique value. The collection was housed in the former Dancing (White) Hall. The funds of Rumyantsev Museum were replenished with the collection of navigator Y. F. Lisyansky in 1837. Academician A. K. Vostokov was the first curator of Rumyantsev Museum. Rumyantsev Museum was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Imperial Public Library in September 1845. Prince V. F. Odoevsky was appointed its director. Sittings of the Society for Encouragement of Artists were held in Rumyantsev Museum in 1831-55. Rumyantsev Museum was transferred to Moscow in 1861. The house of Pashkov housed the museum from that time on. Lenin State Library of the USSR was established on the basis of Rumyantsev Museum library in 1925. The collections were given to various museums of Moscow.
