SPORT PALACES. Sheltered structures where sport competitions and large-scale events are held. In St. Petersburg, almost all sport palaces are have universal functions, with a temporary arena that can be transformed, for example, into a platform for sport games, skating rink for figure skaters or hockey players, gymnastic equipment, or other uses. Various important sport competitions are held in sport palaces (Ice Hockey World Championship in the Ice Palace, 2000), as well as large concerts. The first sport palace was the Yubileiny (18 Dobrolyubova Avenue; 1967, architect G.P. Morozov, engineer A.P. Morozov). The Peterburgsky sport-concert complex was opened for the 1980 Olympic Games (8 Yury Gagarin Avenue). Other palaces include the Zenit Sport Games Palace (9 Butlerova Street), the Obukhovets Palace (130 Obukhovskoy Oborony Prospect), the Star Sport Palace (82 Babushkina Street), and the Army Club Sport Palace (2 Zhdanovskaya Embankment).
