YOUTH RECREATION CENTRE (47 Professor Popov Street), built in 1969-80 (architects P.S. Prokhorov, V.P. Tropin, A.P. Izoitko, engineers V.V. Panova, M.E. Khristiansen) as the first recreational centre for young people in the USSR. The flat, elongated building houses a concert hall seating 1,500 (A.I. Raykin, A.A. Mironov, N.S. Mikhalkov, M.A. Dudin and many others appeared on its stage, the comic-group Litsedey (Mummers) led by V.I. Polunin started its career here), show-room and ballroom, winter garden which covers 1000 square meters, a swimming-pool and other facilities. The complex of Youth Recreation Centre also includes a 14-storeyed hotel with 250 rooms. There is also a sporting complex (in 1994 the Open Commonwealth of Independent States Bodybuilding Championship took place here, in 1998 - the 51st All-Russian Chess Championship), an indoor water park, bowling, billiards, and American pool, as well as a business-centre and conference halls. The radio stations Europa Plus St. Petersburg and Radio Retro broadcast from the building of the Centre. Presently it is Leningrad Youth Recreation Centre, Co. Ltd.
