HOUSE Of KOTOMIN (18 Nevsky Prospect), an architectural monument of classical style. It was constructed in the middle of the 18th century, in 1812-14 rebuilt in an apartment house for merchant K.B. Kotomin (architect V.P. Stasov). The centre of the main facade was adorned with a Doric portico of eight semi-columns (which have not survived), side corbels boasted four-columned loggias with moulded panels. The building is crowned with a cornice with modillions and a frieze of modelled rosettes and masks. In the first half of the 19th century the south wing housed the confectionery of Wolf and Beranger - the most popular meeting point of Petersburg literary men. It was from here that Alexander Pushkin, on 27 January 1837, set off for the duel with J. Dantes. In 1858-2001, on the ground floor there was a bookshop (later a second-hand bookshop), well-known far beyond the boundaries of St. Petersburg. In 1978-81, the house of Kotomin was totally reconstructed. In 1985 in its premises the Literary Cafe (architect Z.B. Tomashevskaya) was opened, where literary soirees take place. Other premises of the ground floor are occupied with various boutiques.
