LAW SOCIETY of Petersburg University, scientific society. Founded in 1877 to study issues of law and legal procedure, it initially had two departments, civil and criminal, with an administrative department and common law department added in 1878 and 1897, respectively. Among founding members were the most prominent lawyers including I. E. Andreevsky, A. F. Koni, V. D. Spasovich, and I. Y. Foinitsky. Its principal activity was to hold commissions in order to discuss separate issues of law or major items of legislation. The society published a journal with changing names in 1894-1914. It was disbanded after the October of 1917.
