GUARDS COMPANY, guards infantry sub-division, raised in 1810 from the ranks of the Court Rover and Yacht Crew. Participated in the wars with France 1812-14, Russo-Turkish wars of 1828-29 and 1877-78, in suppressing the Polish uprising of 1830-31, and Russo-Japanese war of 1904-05. At the beginning of WW I of 1914-18 the Guards company was deployed as part of the 1st and 2nd battalions: the 1st Battalion was dispatched to the Novogeorgievskaya Fortress, and the 2nd, to Warsaw. The Guards company was formed from the region of the Galernaya Harbour; in 1811 it was transferred to the Lithuanian Castle, in 1819 - to the Naval barracks on the Ekateringofsky Avenue (now 22 Rimskogo-Korsakova Avenue). By the beginning of the 20th century the barracks of the Guards company occupied the territory between the Ekateringofsky Avenue, the Ekateringofsky (now Griboedova) Canal and the Kryukov Canal. The chapel of the Guards company was St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, where in its park in May 1908 a monument to navy guardsmen, who perished in the Naval Battle of Tsushima, was unveiled (architect Y.I. Filotey). Seamen of the Guards company participated in the mutiny on the Senate Square on 14 December 1825. On 1 March 1917 the Reserve Guards Company, stationed in Petrograd, turned up at the seat of the State Duma and declared itself "at the disposal of the rebelling people", its sailors occupied Nikolaevsky and Tsarskoselsky Train Stations. In October 1917 the Guards Company participated in the dispersal of Parliament, in the capture of the State Bank and the Astoria Hotel. In March 1918 the Company was disbanded.
