KHUDOZHESTVENNAYA GAZETA (The Art Newspaper), a biweekly publication on painting art, appeared in 1836-38 and 1840-41. Until 1840 the periodical was edited by its publisher N. V. Kukolnik, followed by А. N. Strugovshchikov. The editorial office was situated on the Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island (at the site of house 15). The journal published articles on art history and aesthetics, material on various art techniques; bibliographic essays about Russian and foreign artists, art exhibitions reviews, chronicle of St. Petersburg art life. From 1838 the journal was illustrated with engravings. The Khudozhestvennaya gazeta played a significant role in popularisation of art history.
