MANEGE, the Central Exhibition Hall (1 St. Isaac Square / 2 Konnogvardeisky Boulevard), the largest exhibition hall of St. Petersburg (total exhibition area is about 4,500 square meters). The Manege is located in the building of the former riding school of the Cavalry Guard Regiment (1804-07, architect Giacomo Quarenghi; reconstructed in 1976-77, by architects Mark Budnevich and Mikhail Bratchikov). It was opened on November 5, 1977 with the exhibition of Leningrad artists The Art Belongs to the People. The Manege holds city, regional and international exhibitions and festivals of modern art, subject and personal exhibitions and, however less frequently, sale and industrial exhibitions. From 1993 the Manege hosts the annual city exhibition Petersburg involving up to 500 artists, from 1993 - the International Biennale of Modern Art Dialogues, from 1996 - the International Festival of Modern Arts and Performance. Since 1991, the Manege has been forming the collection of works by modern Petersburg artists (as of 2002, it numbers about 1,500 exhibits).
