LITERATORSKIE (LITERARY) MOSTKI (30 Rasstannaya Street). A museum-necropolis on the territory of the Volkovskoe Orthodox Cemetery (in the northeastern section; the square covers 7.2 hectares; see Volkovskoe Cemeteries); a branch of the Museum of Urban Sculpture. Organised in 1935, named after the board walk (first known as Nadtrubnye; from 1870s, known as the Literary Mostki). V.G. Belinsky (1848), N.A. Dobrolyubov (1861), and D.I. Pisarev (1868) are buried on the territory of the necropolis. The commemoration of these writers was protested by opposition intelligentsia and students. Among those buried at the Literatorskie Mostki are the writers N.S. Leskov, I.A. Goncharov, V.M. Garshin, L.N. Andreev, and A.I. Kuprin, poets A.N. Apukhtin, A.A. Blok, M.A. Kuzmin, M.L. Lozinsky, O.F. Bergholz, scientists and academics N.I. Kostomarov, D.I. Mendeleev, A.S. Popov, I.P. Pavlov, V.M. Bekhterev, and A.F. Ioffe, theatre figures A.Y. Vaganova, K.M. Sergeev, N.P. Akimov, L.S. Vivien, Y.V. Tolubeev, N.K. Simonov, and E.A. Lebedev, composer V.P. Solovyev-Sedoy, film director G.M. Kozintsev, artists K.S. Petrov-Vodkin, E.E. Moiseenko, M.K. Anikushin. N.K. Mikhailovsky, G.A. Lopatin, G.V. Plekhanov, and V.I. Zasulich, along with many other participants of revolutionary activity at the late 19th - early 20th centuries, are buried at Literatorskie Mostki. The Ulyanov family burial site is situated within the museum area of the necropolis (V.I. Lenin's mother, Maria Alexandrovna, his sisters Anna and Olga, as well as their son-in-law M.T. Elizarov, are all buried there). In 1930s, the remains of a number of literary, academic, and scientific figures were transferred to Literatorskie Mostki from an abolished section of the Volkovskoe Cemetery, including I.S. Turgenev and M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin. Outstanding cultural, and academic, and scientific figures are still buried at Literatorskie Mostki. The cemetery's Holy Resurrection Church (1785, architect I.E. Starov) has been used as an exhibition hall since 1952.
