SOLYANOY (SALT) SETTLEMENT, a complex of buildings in the central part of St. Petersburg on the ground between Fontanka River Embankment, Solyanoy Lane, Pestelya Street and Gangutskaya Street. From the 1710s, there was a private dockyard, from the 1780s - salt and wine storehouses constructed by architect F.I. Volkov (hence the name). From the dockyard complex the building of St. Panteleimon’s Church has survived. At the end of the 1860s, the buildings of the Solyanoy Settlement were altered for the All-Russian Industrial Exhibition of 1870. Then they housed Russia's largest cultural and educational centre that comprised of the Museum of Applied Knowledge and Pavilions of the Russian Technical Society (nowadays 2 Pestelya Street), the Agricultural Museum (nowadays 1 Gangutskaya Street; 1876-1879, architect I.S. Kitner, engineer O.E. Krell, S.B. Lukashevich), the Handicraft Museum (9 Solyanoy Lane; 1901-03, architect P.P. Trifanov). The eastern building was replaced by buildings of the Central School for Technical Drawing of Baron Stieglitz (13 Solyanoy Lane; 1878-81, architects A.I. Krakau, R.A. Gedike; currently the Mukhina Art Industrial Academy) and Museum of Decorative Applied Art (15 Solyanoy Lane; 1885-1896, architect M.E. Messmacher). Until October 1917, in Solyanoy Settlement, exhibitions, concerts, lectures, etc. were organised. In 1946-1952, the Museum of the Defence of Leningrad was located (2 Pestelya Street), which was recreated in 1989 as the Museum of the Defence and Siege of Leningrad.
