PEDAGOGICAL UNIVERSITY, Herzen Russian State Pedagogical University, situated at 48 Moika River Embankment. It originates from the Imperial Foster Home founded in 1797. Based on its classes, the Nikolaevsky Women Orphans' Institute was established in 1837, on the basis of which the Women Teachers' Institute was founded in 1903. A number of teachers' training institutions were united in 1921-25 to form the multidisciplinary Herzen Leningrad State Teachers' Institute, which received the status of a university and its present-day name in 1991. Among the organisers, lecturers, and researchers working at the university were K. M. Bykov, V. N. Verkhovsky, B. D. Grekov, V. A. Desnitsky, V. A. Dogel, P. A. Znamensky, A. F. Ioffe, N. M. Knipovich, V. L. Komarov, I. V. Kurchatov, S. F. Oldenburg, A. P. Pinkevich, I. I. Polyansky, B. E. Raykov, V. P. Semenov-Tyan-Shansky, V. V. Struve, E. V. Tarle, I. I. Tolstoy, A. E. Fersman, G. M. Fichtenholz, O. D. Khvolson, and Y. D. Shokalsky. There were the following departments in 2002: philology, social sciences, foreign languages, correctional teaching techniques, preschool education, scientific education, human philosophy, psychology of teaching, economics, mathematics, physics, geography, chemistry, biology, natural science, technology and entrepreneurship, fine arts, music, physical education, and health and safety. The university has six institutes, as well as branches in Vyborg, Volkhov, and Makhachkala. It cooperates a lot with international organisations taking part in international exchange and study abroad programs. The buildings that accommodate the university are notable architectural monuments of the early and high classicism. These include Razumovsky Palace at 48 Moika River Embankment, Stegelman's House at building 2 50 Moika River Embankment, the main building of the former Foster Home at 52 Moika River Embankment, the former Deaf and Dumb School at 54 Moika River Embankment, and the former Board of Trustees at 7 Kazanskaya Square built by architect G. Quarenghi in 1808-10 and rebuilt by architect P. S. Pavlov in 1834-38 and architect P. I. Tamansky in 1855-59.
