SEVER (North) (44 Nevsky Prospect). A cafe opened together with a confectioner's shop (see Quisisana) in the early 1960s on the premises of the former Teatralnoe (Theatre) Cafe. Sever was the first to produce profiteroles in chocolate sauce, “flavoured fillets” and other pastries that caught the fancy of Leningrad residents. The shop featured days for foreign cuisine (Bulgarian, Chinese), as well as so-called theme dinners (like "Fisherman’s" or "Hunter’s" dinners) and fashion shows. For many years, cakes and pastries offered by Sever were ranked best in Leningrad, and the place was a sort of showcase for the city. Nord confectioner's shop, owned by merchant F. K. Krymzenkov, was located here in 1903-17. It was known for freshness and excellent taste (as part of tradition, St. Petersburgers still call it Nord).
