RAIL TRANSPORT MUSEUM, Central Rail Transport Museum of the Railway Ministry of the Russian Federation (50 Sadovaya Street), Russia's first technology history museum and one of the world's oldest rail transport museums. Founded in 1813 in the Institute of Railway Engineer Corps (officially named a museum in 1823) it was first opened to visitors in 1862, and in 1910 merged with Nicholas I Railway Department Museum. In 1932 (upon splitting from the Water Transport Museum) it was known as the Rail Transport Museum, acquiring its present name in1992. The museum building was constructed in 1901-02 (architect P. S. Kupinsky) and expanded in 1910-11 (architect Е. Е. von Baumgarten). The collection of the museum contained over 50,000 items in 2003. The exposition provides information on the history of the first Russian steam locomotive designed by the Cherepanov brothers and the railway in Nizhny Tagil, as well as the construction of the Tsarskoselsky railway, Transsibirian Railway and other railways in Russia from the second half of the 19th century to the present day. It also features high-quality models of train stations, bridges, train cares and engines, documents and drawings on the history of rail transport.
