Nilometre

Categories / Architecture/Sculpture, Monuments

NILOMETRE is situated on the right bank of Moika River, behind Siny Bridge. It was built in 1970-71 (architect V.А. Petrov, engineer P.S. Panfilov) in the form of four-sided obelisk, cut into the granite embankment facing. The lower part of the nilometre goes into the water, the marks on the edges showing the current water level. The increase of water level during major floods (1824, 1903, 1924, 1955, and 1967) is indicated on the nilometre. The nilometre is crowned with Neptune's trident.
