June. The headquarters of the virgin lands workers was organized at the Leningrad Agricultural Institute; the headquarters began to form the student units for the work on the virgin lands in Kazakhstan. In 1956 the 1,300- student-unit worked on the harvest of wheat in the Pavlodar Region. V.Shkrabak (the future principal of the Institute during 1994-2003, doctor of sciences), A.Pavlyukov, S. Konshin, L. Sulima were distingiushed student-combine operators.

1 September. The first music school, after the war, was opened in 46 October Boulevard; in 1958 the school was transferred into the premises of the Catherine Palace and in 1970 it was transferred into the building of the former Mariinskaya Gymnasium in 17 Leontyevskaya Street.
