GANNIBAL Abram (Ibrahim) Petrovich (around 1696-1781, of Suyda Sofiysky District, St. Petersburg Province), Peter the Great's godson, military engineer, chief engineer (1756), Major-General (1759), great-grandfather of Аlexander Pushkin. Born in the town of Agon (on the territory of present day Cameroon), in 1705 Gannibal was brought from Turkey to Moscow. Studied in France (1717-23, from 1720 - in the artillery school in LaFerre). Supervised engineering activities (including his own projects) in Kronstadt, Tobolsk, Selenginsk, Pernov, Vyborg, Schlisselburg, Rogervik, and in Peter and Paul Fortress. From 1755, he served as head of the Engineering Corps, from 1756, as member of the Central Chancellery of Artillery and Fortification, built a training ground on the Vyborg Side, where the students of the Artillery School practiced shooting, and the students of the Engineering School mastered methods of engineering attacks on fortresses. From 1759 he assumed the post of Chief Director of the Ladoga Canal and the Commission of Kronstadt and Rogervik buildings. Gannibal retired in 1762.
