LEVINSON-LESSING Vladimir Franzevich (1893-1972, Leningrad), museum worker, art historian, professor (1940). The son of F.Y. Levinson-Lessing. Studied at Forestry School and Tenishevsky School. Upon graduating from the Faculty of History and Philology of Petrograd University in 1916, he continued his studies and research at the Department of World History. In 1919, he worked in the Russian Museum; in 1921, was appointed research assistant of the Picture Gallery of the Hermitage, took part in systematising, cataloguing, describing the exhibits and creating the exposition. Concurrently, Levinson-Lessing served as curator of Oranienbaum Palace Museum (1924-26), member of the expert commission of the Antiquity Association (1928-33), research assistant (assistant professor) of the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1936-38), and editor at Kubuch Publishing House (1931-33). In 1936-56 (with breaks), he headed the department of Western European Art of the Hermitage. In 1941-45, Levinson-Lessing held the post of the director of the Hermitage branch in Sverdlovsk. Upon returning to Leningrad, he lectured at Leningrad State University, the Academy of Arts and other institutes of higher education. In 1945-47 and in 1956-67, Levinson-Lessing acted as deputy director for research of the Hermitage. In 1967, he was appointed to serve as research consultant of the Hermitage board. An editor-in-chief of the Catalogue of Western European Paintings in the Hermitage Collection (1958), he wrote over 25 works on Western European art. His fundamental work is The History of the Picture Gallery of the Hermitage, published in 1977. Levinson-Lessing lived at 46 Volodarskogo Avenue (renamed Liteiny Avenue in 1944.). Buried at Literatorskie Mostki.
