PENATY (411 Primorskoe Highway, Repino) is a museum estate of I. E. Repin, a branch of the Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts. The museum is located near Repino railway station (before 1944, the place was called Kuokkala; in 1918-39, it was located on the territory of Finland), on the shore of the Gulf of Finland where Repin purchased a land plot with a wooden house under the name of his wife N. B. Nordman-Severova in 1899. The estate was constructed according to the sketches and drafts by the artist himself, who moved here with his family in 1903 and lived here to the day of his death on 29 September, 1930. Penaty was visited by L. N. Andreev, V. M. Bekhterev, I. I. Brodsky, A. K. Glazunov, A. M. Gorky, S. A. Esenin, A. I. Kuprin, V. V. Mayakovsky, D. I. Mendeleev, I. P. Pavlov, V. V. Stasov, K. I. Chukovsky, F. I. Chaliapin, and others. The Penaty Museum was opened in 1940. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, its exhibits were relocated to Leningrad and kept at the Academy of Arts. Penaty was burnt in the years of the war and was opened again to visitors after restoration works in 1962. The next repairs of the estate and renovation of the exhibition were held in 1992-94. Following the restoration project the park and the house were reconstructed to their original look of 1905-12. The memorial part of the exhibition includes an anteroom, a study, a living room, a winter veranda, a dining room and a workshop. Works by Repin, his friends and disciples, personal things of the artist and members of his family are on display. The grave of Repin is located on the grounds of the estate. The cross on the tomb was lost during the war.
