Kronstadt Fortress

KRONSTADT FORTRESS (Kronstadt, 1 Yakornaya Square), museum, a branch of the Central Military and Naval Museum. Organised by A. A. Antipov who also acted as its first director the museum was opened on 8.5.1980 in the building of the Naval Cathedral. The exposition in 7 halls with a total area of 900 square meters contains over 3,000 exhibits, including materials on the history of the Baltic Fleet from the times of Peter the Great to the present day, on the history of building the Kronstadt Fortress, the Gunpowder Plant (today known as Kronstadt Naval Plant), ship docks and other buildings in Kronstadt, on the development of steam and armoured fleet, the role of Kronstadt in the revolutionary movement and the Civil War, as well as in the defence of Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. The exhibition features about 100 high-quality ship models, engravings and paintings on the history of the fleet, armament, military equipment, marine maps, authentic documents, portraits and personal belongings of Navy officers.
