STRAVINSKY Igor Fedorovich (1882, Oranienbaum - 1971), composer and director, son of F.I. Stravinsky. In 1900-05 he studied at the Faculty of Law at Petersburg University, taking composition classes from N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov between 1903 and 1905. Many of his early works premiered in St. Petersburg, including Faun and Shepherdess (1908) and Scherzo Fantastique (1909). In 1909 he received a commission by S.P. Dyagilev to write The Firebird ballet for the ballet troupe Russian Seasons in Paris. In 1910 he began spending extended periods abroad, and in 1914 emigrated permanently. He visited Leningrad in 1962, conducting a concert of his own works in the Large Hall of the Philharmonic. During the Soviet period, Stravinsky's music had played at concerts up to 1930 and after 1962. E.A. Mravinsky regularly staged his ballets Agon, Apollon Musagete, Petrushka. In 1920 Petrushka was staged at the Mariinsky Theatre and in 1961 at the Maly Opera Theatre, where The Rite of Spring was staged in 1969. The premier night Tribute to Stravinsky took place in 2003 in the Mariinsky Theatre, with performances of his opera Oedipus Rex, his choral cantata Les Noces, and his ballet The Rite of Spring.
