ARANOVICH Semen Davidovich (1934-1996), film director, People’s Artist of Russia (1994). Graduated as a director from the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography in 1965. Worked at the Leningrad Studio of Documentary Films from 1966 and Lennauchfilm Studio from 1971. Became the art director of Kinodokument Creative Association in 1991. Served as the chairman of the board at the Union of Cinematographers, St. Petersburg, in 1992-95. He directed over 30 documentary and feature films, his Anna Akhmatova File and I Was Stalin's Bodyguard typifying the documentary film of the glasnost era. Among his most remarkable feature films are Summer Trip to Sea (1979), Torpedo Bombers (1983), and Year of the Dog (1993). He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1987, and received awards at international film festivals held in Leipzig, Berlin, Kiev, and Minsk. His last lived in St. Petersburg at 6 Ryleeva Street.
